Pride

"Pride is the essence of every sin. It is attempted theft of God’s glory and therefore how all sin is basically self-worship, or idolatry. The only way to root out pride, then, is by re-ordering our hearts according to God’s due glory. It is the finished work of Christ communicated by the gospel that does this."

Scripture, from beginning to end, declares that sin destroys. Because of sin, life ends in death. And sins aren’t just things we do—they’re who we are. As Scripture says, we are sinners, and the wages of sin is death.

Revelation 19:1-16

Intro:
  • The purpose of Revelation is to sustain us through our suffering in the present by giving us a glimpse of the future perfection of God's kingdom
  • In what ways do we suffer now? How can a glimpse of the perfection of God's kingdom help you through your suffering?

Jesus returns (Rev 19:1-5)
  • "Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God"
    • Why are they praising God in Heaven?
      • Justice
  • Where do we see injustice today? How does the promise of future justice affect your attitude toward injustice in the present?
  • Lion king - what happens when Simba comes back and rules?

His bride is revealed (Rev 19:6-10)
  • Who is the bride?
  • How is the bride described?
    • Patient and expectant for marriage
    • Prepared to be with the Lamb
    • Fine linen
    • Fortunate and blessed
  • How do we prepare ourselves for the marriage feast of the Lamb?

Evil is finally defeated (Rev 19.11-16)
  • Who is being described here?
  • How is he described
  • "In righteousness, he judges and makes war" - interesting language
  • "Diadems" - like a crown
  • "The Word of God" - like John 1
    • So, for his Jewish readers, by introducing Jesus as the “Word,” John is in a sense pointing them back to the Old Testament where the Logos or “Word” of God is associated with the personification of God’s revelation.
    • And in Greek philosophy, the term Logos was used to describe the intermediate agency by which God created material things and communicated with them. In the Greek worldview, the Logos was thought of as a bridge between the transcendent God and the material universe. Therefore, for his Greek readers the use of the term Logos would have likely brought forth the idea of a mediating principle between God and the world.

How does the future return of Christ alter the way I live?
  • Hope - things will be restored back to the way it was
    • In Narnia, Aslan restored everything
  • Peace - we don't have to worry about the future. God wins
  • Joy - we don't have to face judgement and God wins
  • Surrender - we will not win. All of our idols will fade away. Our kingdoms will fall. This world will fade away, but Jesus will always be there and He will be with us.
